Fiasko Leitmotiv Interview

Born out of lockdown boredom and fuelled by chaos, Fiasko Leitmotiv craft brooding soundscapes that blur the line between post-punk, shoegaze, and electronic. From vegetable gardens to Soviet-style hangars, their environment deeply shapes their music. With a strong poetic undercurrent and a taste for unpredictability, the Milan-based band is anything but conventional. Ahead of their London show at The Victoria with us, we caught up with them to talk existentialism, evolution, and “Fiasko Totale.” Read what they had to say below!

How did Fiasko Leitmotiv first come together?

We can say that Fiasko Leitmotiv was born out of boredom during lockdown. We were all shacked up together, navigating the pandemic getting fucked up, good times, growing vegetables, and of course, making music. It really just started as us messing around, but before we knew it, we turned into a serious project.

What draws you to explore themes like chaos and existentialism in your music?

When it comes to chaos and existentialism in our music, it's quite straightforward: chaos is just an order we haven't quite grasped yet. And existentialism? Well, it's a wonderfully deep word that just fit the vibe of our band's story. Our tracks are like time capsules; they capture the precise thoughts and feelings of a given moment, both personal and from the environment we are surrounded by. Listen to them a year later, and they're already expired – the moment, and that feeling, has passed.

How has your sound evolved from Humblekids to A Noiseless Patient Spider?

Our sound from Humblekids to A Noiseless Patient Spider is really a direct consequence of the emotions, situations, and even the music we were absorbing at the time. After lockdown, we found ourselves in a brutalist, almost Soviet-style industrial hangar we turned into our studio, and those dark wave vibes became quite dominant in our sound.

However, once we moved back to our homes with lake views, our music evolved. The sound became more acoustic, leaning into post-punk, reflecting our new environment. The underlying chaos remained, but that strong, dark imaginary wasn't part of us anymore. Our latest productions and the upcoming album continue to reflect the life we've been living in various chaotic cities, always hitting those post-punk chords with a touch of shoegaze.

How do you balance gritty guitar textures with electronic and synth-driven elements?

Blending gritty guitar textures with electronic and synth-driven elements comes naturally. Having grown up immersed in both acoustic and electronic genres, we find that combining them allows for a natural flow that perfectly suits the tracks we're producing.

What can people expect from your live set at The Victoria in London?

As a band named Fiasko Leitmotiv, you should probably expect the unexpected! But on a more serious note, prepare for a full journey through our sonic evolution. We'll hit all the key checkpoints from our past productions, culminating in our latest phase, and yes, there will be plenty of unreleased material in the mix.

What role does poetry play in your songwriting?

It plays a fundamental role - you can find many references to poetry in our lyrics. Also our names was taken randomly from a literature book.

If your band had a signature cocktail, what would be in it, and what would you call it?

Well, it would be a random mix of alcoholic ingredients, and its name would definitely be Fiasko Totale.
