Charlie Keen's Silver Birch
POZI - Pozi come steeped in the lineage of the very best weirdo British indie pop. The trio of drummer/vocalist Burroughs, violinist/vocalist Rosa Brook and bassist/ vocalist Frank Lindsay bring a fun skittish, restless energy.
Despite drawing on influences such as Devo, Wire and Television, there are no guitars - the space afforded by the lack of this potentially domineering component is refreshing. Instead, there's Brook's violin that by turn swells and stresses, either buoying proceedings along or collapsing them into discord. Then there's Burroughs' sparsely-filled but frantically driven rhythmic repetition and his capital city yelp, words tumbling out as though desperately trying to get out of the way of the ones behind. Last year’s release of their second album Smiling Pools was followed by tour support of Sleaford Mods around Europe - the band continue to evolve and are currently creating new material towards their next release, which will surely not disappoint.
WIDGET - Wonky, funky and kinda post punky. Queer supergroup operating secretly out of East London. Your favourite band's favourite band's favourite band. Debut EP out now on Peach Records.
Charlie Keen's Silver Birch - Charlie Keen is a talented multi instrumentalist. Inspired by John Martyn, Anthony Braxton, Ravel and the philosophy of Kenny Werner, Charlie Keen's Silver Birch explores nostalgia and loss with a graceful suspense and introspective resonance. A sort of punctuated meditative state - the sonorous drones of the Shruti box and mournful ambient synth create a reminiscent backcloth to his trombone compositions. At times alarming, at others heartbreakingly sombre and yet somehow never without an enlivening joy, Keens’ trombone playing takes centre stage after years of playing with and for other people including- Keg, Terry Pack's Tree's, Skydaddy and Squid.
